DXM Decals 1/72 F-15J/DJ 201st TFS Air Show & 30th Anniversary

DXM Decals 1/72 F-15J/DJ 201st TFS Air Show & 30th Anniversary

This decal sheet, 81-7120, covers 3 aircraft:

  • 62-8873 F-15J Chitose AB Festival 2012
  • 52-8860 F-15J 201st TFS 30th Anniversary 2015
  • 92-8094 F-15DJ 201st TFS 30th Anniversary 2015

The decals arrived from DXM Decals in an envelope clearly marked ‘Do Not Bend’. Inside the envelope, the decals were secured between 2 pieces of cardboard. The decals themselves are in a self-sealing plastic bag, with a tab at the top for hanging the bag on a sales rack in a store. There’s plenty of space in the bag so getting the decals in and out is not a problem. The bottom folds up over the bag and has a sticky stripe on it to seal it. I found that the sticky strip tends to stick to everything, so I folded the sticky tab back on itself and sealed the bag with a second, smaller, piece of tape. This way I can put things back inside the bag a lot easier. Inside the bag are:

  • Two A4/Letter sized, double-sided, colour sheet of decal placement instructions.
  • One large decal sheet. (15cm x 21cm)
  • One smaller decal sheet (5cm x 3cm)

The instructions are on both sides of the two sheets of paper and the only part of the instructions not used for decal placement is the cover. You are given left and right views of all 3 aircraft along with partial views to see the other sides of the rudders.  You also have top and bottom views with a separate top view of 92-8094 so you can clearly see the positioning of the large decals on the top of the aircraft. It also mentions that 52-8860 doesn’t have a couple of decals the other 2 use. On the second sheet of paper, you have all 4 views of an F-15J to show you the panel number decal placements. The instructions, as you can see from the images, are clearly laid out, although there are a lot of decals to be fixed.

The decals themselves are by Cartograph so the quality is very good. There is minimal carrier film except for the places where it is being used to hold a few small sections of digital camouflage together to make sure the alignment between them is correct. The decals themselves look very thin and in register and the colours look good. It looks like you have one set of stencils and panel numbers, so if you want to do more than one aircraft from this set you will have to use the stencils from the kit you’re building.

Overall, it’s a very nice decal sheet with 3 interesting schemes. I like that it covers the F-15J and DJ and if you have a bit of an F-15J obsession this set will give you 3 very nice marking options.

Many thanks to DXM Decals for the review sample. You can buy this set for $17.00 from the DXM Decals website.
